In the 70's, 80's and 90's, sun screen was not popular. Sun bathing and dark tans were the norm. Today, we realize the sun's impact upon appearances. Laser resurfacing is an option that is best for gaining that youthful, healthy look.
Carbon dioxide laser resurfacing is an aggressive treatment for sun damaged skin and fine lines and wrinkles. Under topical and/or IV sedation anesthesia, the laser is used to remove the top layer of skin as well as penetrating the deeper layer effecting collagen remodeling, causing the skin to tighten over time.
After approximately 10 days a new layer of skin forms followed by intense redness for several months. Camouflaging make-up can be used to hide the redness until it fades. Sunlight avoidance during the healing process is essential to prevent discoloration of the new skin. A sun screen and bleaching agent are usually prescribed to help prevent post inflammatory hyperpigmentation.
