Breast augmentation is a surgical
procedure to enhance the female breast
volume and shape. It can be done under IV
sedation or general anesthesia.
A
pocket is created either under the natural
breast tissue or under the chest muscle. The
incision can be made under the breast in the
natural fold or through the areola (nipple).
An implant filled with either saline or
silicone depending upon the patient’s
preference is inserted into the pocket and
the incision is then closed.
The patient is typically placed in an
athletic bra for several weeks after the
surgery and the patient may return to work
in several days following the surgery.
Some women may experience some drooping or
sagging of the breast, in these cases a
mastopexy or breast lift may be
performed alone or in conjunction with a
breast augmentation. An incision is made
around the nipple and under the breast to
remove excess skin. This procedure is
associated with more scarring than a simple
breast augmentation.
